London with possible travel to Brussels

We are the Government’s main provider of legal services across all Whitehall departments. Providing guidance on a broad and diverse range of issues ranging from public services to international trade agreements, our work impacts on the way that policies and legislation are formed and implemented – thereby directly affecting the success and security of the nation.

The work we do is scrutinised by the media and the public, offering a unique opportunity to be involved in high-profile issues that are as interesting as they are challenging.

Our vision is to offer a supportive and stimulating environment for our 2,200 employees, providing a calibre of advice that is both value for money and industry-leading in its quality.

The Government Legal Department (GLD) offers a once-in-a-lifetime challenge in which applications are welcomed from lawyers at all stages in their careers. We’ll support you with our exceptional in-house training programme plus all the support you could possibly need to develop the legal skills that will ensure the British Government makes decisions that are legally-sound.

We want you to achieve your career goals, so we’ll help you do this with a wealth of opportunities across our divisions. As such, we have more than 14 client-facing teams across advisory, commercial and litigation areas of law, with roles available in all teams. We’ll encourage you to move between these services, developing your knowledge and capabilities, while individuals with less than one year of experience will spend two years in both a contentious and a non-contentious post.

To thrive in the GLD, you’ll have a minimum of a 2:1 degree in any subject, or equivalent high level academic or professional achievements. You’ll be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales (or you will be on the verge of qualifying) and you will have completed a training contract, pupillage or qualifying employment (unless you have been exempted from this by the Law Society, the Bar Council or CILEx).

You’ll need to have strong intellectual and analytical skills, with a sound understanding of public law. With good legal judgement and the ability to appreciate legal risk, your creative and strategic approach to solving problems will ensure you can appreciate legal issues in their wider context.

You’ll need to have a good understanding of the role of lawyers in Government, and your solid verbal and written communication skills will prove invaluable. Confident in your ability to analyse and evaluate data, you’ll utilise comprehensive legal research to produce high quality advice.

If you share our commitment to providing great customer service and seeing to it that the needs of clients are met, then you’ll thrive in the Government Legal Department. And in turn, we’ll ensure you flourish in this dynamic environment.

Company

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall Departments.   From roads to rivers, and health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life.

The department has more than 14 client-facing advisory teams who provide legal advice on the development, design and implementation of government policies and decisions, draft secondary legislation and work with Parliamentary Counsel on primary legislation.  Our cross-cutting expert service groups for Litigation, Employment and Commercial Law provide specialist legal services to a wide range of government departments and public bodies.

We are a non-ministerial government department with more than 2,300 employees, around 1,800 of whom are solicitors or barristers. The department is based primarily in London but has teams in Bristol, Manchester, and Leeds.

As an organisation our vision is to be trusted by government to provide consistently excellent and value for money services so government departments want to come to us to meet their legal needs, to be known throughout the legal profession for the quality of our legal work, and to be the best employer for our people.
