About the Care Quality Commission (CQC):

CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. We make sure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and we encourage care services to improve. We monitor, inspect and regulate services to ensure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and we publish what we find to help people choose care. People work at CQC because they believe we make a positive difference to people’s lives and we have a strong set of values which everyone in CQC helped to develop.

About the role:

We all use health services and may know people who access adult social care services. This is an opportunity to join an organisation that has an impact on the improvement agenda for those services, so that you can make a difference to the standard of care people receive in hospitals, primary medical services and care homes.

As a Senior Lawyer in our Governance and Legal Services (GLS) team you will have the responsibility to ensure that decisions taken by CQC are legally robust by identifying legal risks early and working to ensure that these are managed appropriately. Working closely with the GLS Senior Leadership Team you will play a key role in contributing to the development of the overall legal priorities for CQC. Holding responsibility for advising on all legal matters that affect CQC, you will quickly be able to identify trends and consistent issues across the organisation.

You will lead, manage, develop and motivate a team of legal professionals, working across the Legal Services function to champion, prioritise and embed appropriate legal advice to drive a quality culture across the organisation.

About you:

You will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives with significant post qualification experience, giving you an established history of managing caseloads, advising on legal matters and managing enforcement activity.

Proven regulatory and enforcement experience; civil and / or criminal is a must to allow you to advise on the work of CQC’s Inspection Directorates and have the ability to undertake urgent action. You will also be able to analyse risk and benefit within a fast-paced environment, and to reassess priorities on a continual basis.

Your excellent communication, relationship building and engagement skills will give you the ability to secure and maintain the confidence of a range of Commission stakeholders.

This an exciting and demanding role requiring strong management and leadership skills along with the ability to provide solutions-focused legal advice to support the delivery of CQC’s strategic objectives.

We are particularly keen to hear from those with experience working in health and/or social care law and regulation.

Underpinning all of this, we expect you be committed to CQC’s values of Excellence, Caring, Integrity and Teamwork.
