Legal Advisers / Senior Legal Advisers – Permanent and FTC

London Westminster (moving to Canary Wharf in early 2018): £43,600 - £69,700 or Glasgow: £41,200 - £64,000

Ofgem is committed to making a positive difference for energy consumers through effective regulation of the market and close working with suppliers to ensure sustainable energy for consumers and businesses in the UK.

A career with Ofgem is a unique professional opportunity. Our work touches on virtually all of the 26 million households and businesses in Great Britain who are energy consumers. It’s an exciting era of change and evolution within the energy marketplace – new technology and the drive towards a low-carbon energy sector are shaping a new energy system that is more decentralised, smart and flexible. And Ofgem is at the forefront of this change.

In addition, we are centralising our legal teams (including E-Serve) to be headed up by a General Counsel (new role), who will report to the CEO and lead our lawyers taking responsibility for the organisational legal risk. The legal teams will still partner with the business as they do today, but through this change Ofgem will be able to deliver a more streamlined and consistent approach, and work more flexibly across boundaries.

The vacancies are within the following legal teams:

  • Improving Regulation
  • Consumers and Competition
  • Energy Systems
  • Networks
  • E-Serve

As a Legal Adviser you’ll play a vital role within our policy teams, working across a range of our key business areas. You’ll offer timely and expert legal advice on a range of issues – either in relation to ad-hoc issues or requests, or in an ongoing role within a project or case team. You’ll help to ensure that policy recommendations are legally sound, and that possible risks or legal challenges are identified, explored and mitigated. It’s a fast-paced and professionally rewarding working environment, and you should be confident delivering under pressure and managing competing demands. Our Senior Legal Advisers may also have the opportunity to manage other colleagues – offering advice, support and professional development.

You should offer strong skills in analysis, use of evidence and sound legal judgement, and professional experience of advising in a relevant professional area. Good all round communication skills, including high standards in drafting are essential. You should be a committed team player, and have a good track record of delivery in a multi-disciplinary environment. Plus have relevant PQE work.  If you can also demonstrate strong leadership and project management skills, you could be considered for one of our Senior Legal Adviser roles.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:

  • Up to 30 days’ annual leave
  • Excellent training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
  • Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
  • Subsidised gym and restaurant (London only)
  • Interest free season ticket loan.

Ofgem is an equal opportunities employer. Protecting consumers and powering the future of the energy debate.

Company

Ofgem

Ofgem is the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets. Protecting consumers is our first priority. We do this by promoting competition, wherever appropriate, and regulating the monopoly companies which run the gas and electricity networks. The interests of gas an electricity consumers are their interests taken as a whole, including their interests in the reduction of greenhouse gases and in the security of the supply of gas and electricity to them.
Other priorities and influences include:

- helping to secure Britain's energy supplies by promoting competitive gas and electricity markets - and regulating them so that there is adequate investment in the networks, and
- contributing to the drive to curb climate change and other work aimed at sustainable development by, for example:
- helping the gas and electricity industries to achieve environmental improvements as efficiently as possible; and
- taking account of the needs of vulnerable customers, particularly older people, those with disabilities and those on low incomes.

Ofgem is an equal opportunities employer.
