Brexit Lawyer (2 year fixed-term contract)

We have a unique and interesting role for a qualified Lawyer to provide legal advice concerning all domestic, constitutional, international, administrative and public law issues facing the Bailiwick governments and authorities in respect of Brexit, and additionally matters relating to the constitutional relationship of the islands and the UK and the EU;

Among the issues that will fall within the scope of this role will be membership of the World Trade Organisation or other post-Brexit trading partnerships; immigration; customs and trade; transport; agriculture and fisheries; health and safety; the impact on financial services; the effect of existing EU law applicable to the Bailiwick by virtue of Protocol 3 to the Treaty of Accession and otherwise; and the implementation of the UK transitional and exit arrangements with effect from Brexit day (the 29th March, 2019).

Much of the work will be demand led in response to international, domestic and political commitments and negotiations. This is a challenging role where you will often have to be complete tasks to strict time deadlines and in a rapidly changing legal and political context.

In addition, you will need to liaise regularly with civil servants (and in particular the External and International Relations team), other public servants, the other islands of the Bailiwick and other Crown Dependencies, and the UK authorities (in particular Ministry of Justice and Department for Exiting the EU). 

To be successful in this role you should have solid PQE experience and good knowledge of European Union law, the Institutions of the European Union and international agreements. In addition you should ideally have experience in, or appreciation of, public law issues such as human rights, constitutional and administrative law and statutory powers and duties.

We will support a housing permit to allow you to work and live in Guernsey for the length of the contract.
