If yes, we welcome your application to join Staffordshire and West Midlands Police Legal Services as an Operational Lawyer.

We have a unique opportunity for a qualified Solicitor or Barrister to join us as an Operational Lawyer within the joint Legal Services team of Staffordshire and West Midlands Police. This is a full time position primarily based in central Birmingham (working from Staffordshire Police HQ as required).

Salary: £39,522 - £46,422

As an Operational Lawyer you will provide effective, pragmatic and timely legal advice on a wide range of legal matters. Civil preventative orders will focus on sexual harm, gang-related violence and drug-dealing activity, anti-social behaviour, forced marriage, FGM, violent offenders, and slavery and trafficking. Your role will include representing the Chief Constables and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) before the appropriate Courts and Tribunals. You will also have conduct of Inquests, Public Order matters, Alcohol and Firearms Licensing, Applications for Forfeiture of Cash, Police Misconduct and Judicial Review matters. 

The department has a history of handling cases of national interest and importance; we are able to offer a unique opportunity to a lawyer of the right calibre.

This role will require travel to locations throughout the Forces area. You may be required to work weekends and bank/public holidays on occasion.

The ideal candidate for this role will:

•Be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with relevant PQE.

•Have demonstrable experience of advising on a range of complex police law matters.

•Have knowledge and experience of police related legislation, civil preventative orders and of Judicial Review matters.

•Have experience of Inquests and/or Public Inquiries.

•Be a clear and effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.

•Be an effective problem solver with an eye for detail and demonstrable time management skills.

•Be able to work autonomously and take on new areas of work with minimal supervision.

•Have demonstrable ability to manage a complex and varied caseload in a proactive manner.

It is desirable, but not essential, that you have experience within a public sector legal team.
