The CPS is a high profile organisation right at the heart of the Criminal justice System.  The DPP is ultimately responsible for the CPS’s decision making (independent of the police and of government) in ensuring that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence - and in bringing offenders to justice wherever possible.

Accountable for a budget of c.£500m, the DPP is also responsible for providing strategic direction to the organisation, leading its 6000 people and promoting its values, vision and professional standards.

The CPS must provide a professional, efficient, cost effective and high quality service to handle the full gamut of criminal cases.  Challenges on the horizon include the increasing complexity of prosecutions for sexual abuse, fraud and terrorism and ensuring ongoing international cooperation as part of Brexit preparations.

The role requires excellent leadership and decision making capability, as well as the skills to communicate with other partners in the criminal justice system, with government and with the media.

The successful candidate will have at least 10 years’ post qualified experience (a statutory minimum requirement) as either a barrister or solicitor in England & Wales, with a significant criminal litigation practice.  The appointment is open only to British Citizens, and will be offered on a full time basis for a five year initial term.
