(relocating to Canary Wharf in June 2018)

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is the independent statutory body with oversight of the police complaints system. The IOPC conducts independent investigations into the most serious and sensitive cases and also provides an independent appeal mechanism for some complaint investigations carried out by the police.

Our work is often high profile and our profile is increasing. We are handling more complex investigations and our powers are evolving to help us deliver our primary statutory responsibility of securing and maintaining public confidence in the police complaints system.

As part of a programme of legislative reform, a new power to present cases at misconduct hearings in certain circumstances will be conferred upon the IOPC in or around April 2019.

The IOPC is recruiting 5 Presenting Lawyers to join the new Presenting Unit, a specialist in-  house team with responsibility for presenting cases at misconduct hearings, on behalf of  the IOPC.

Company

We oversee the police complaints system in England and Wales and set the standards the police should apply when handling complaints.

As a totally independent body, not part of the police or government, we investigate and make decisions on serious and sensitive cases, including where police action may have led to death or serious injury.

Our work is challenging and high-profile. Focusing on the facts, we must be balanced, fair and totally independent. We must respect human rights, while getting to the heart of some of the most serious and sensitive cases. Most of all, we must gain and retain the confidence of everyone we meet by treating them with respect, integrity and honesty.
