We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our Research Contracts Team.

The University of Birmingham is one of the most ambitious institutions in the UK, with clear and challenging strategic goals for significantly increasing our research activity by investing to create a research environment where academic rigor and innovation can flourish with the support of best-in-class Professional Services teams. The Research Contracts team plays a vital role in supporting Birmingham’s world-leading research activity.

If you are seeking a new exciting opportunity to make a real difference to a prestigious organisation then this could be the role for you.

The main focus of the role will be to provide an outstanding service to researchers in drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide range of contract types including clinical trial agreements, international and multiparty collaborations, framework agreements, research agreements, studentships and others. With the increasing complexity and international nature of the University’s research it is ever more important that the ideal candidate can understand and interpret the needs of the academic and work closely with them in order to fully appreciate the requirements that the contract should address. In addition the candidate must not lose sight of the need to make sure the contract protects the University from taking on undue risks and liabilities whilst protecting its assets and charitable objectives.

We are looking for individuals with different levels of experience of working in a university or a research-intensive organisation, including industry and/or a law environment. Ideal candidates will either have hands on experience in academic research with the ability to apply that knowledge in a contract including the understanding of intellectual property and related challenges, or knowledge of contract law and practical experience in drafting and negotiating contracts, including experience gained within the higher education sector.

The post holder will be expected to organise and prioritise their own workload in response to requests from the academic community. They will use initiative to identify solutions to contractual problems as they arrive, developing suitable responses to new situations in this expanding and changing field. They must also be able to work well independently and in a team and have a positive, can-do approach. The post holder will have excellent verbal and written communication skills with an aptitude for developing positive working relationships. In particular they will have the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely to a wide range of people, including the highest levels of academic, corporate and government representatives. Diplomacy, tact, attention to detail and a calm approach are essential.

If you can demonstrate a strong service ethic and positive attitude, can thrive under pressure, take pride in meeting your own and your team's objectives, and would like to join an ambitious and fast-growing organisation then we would love to hear from you.
