Job Details

LawWorks (the Solicitors Pro Bono Group) is a charity which enables access to justice by encouraging and supporting legal pro bono in England and Wales. We work primarily with solicitors, law schools and law students, and other legal and non-legal volunteers and organisations.

Head of Not For Profits Programme

Salary: £35,073

Hours: 35 per week, full-time (job share/part time considered)

Our Not-For-Profits Programme facilitates the provision of free legal advice (pro bono) for small charities and not-for-profit organisations, supported by volunteer lawyers from among LawWorks’ members. The team assess and process applications for legal assistance and place the cases with the volunteer lawyers.

The pro bono lawyers advise on a range of legal issues, including property, employment, tax, insurance and contract matters. Work can include drafting a contract, reviewing a lease or clarifying rights in a dispute. The free legal advice makes a difference to hundreds of charities and not-for-profits.

The Head of Not-For-Profits Programme manages the programme, including line-managing the Not-For-Profit Programme Officer (Legal), and contributes to its strategic development and ensuring its ongoing effectiveness, reach and impact. The team assess and process applications for legal assistance and place the cases with the volunteer lawyers.

The role offers a great opportunity to lead and shape LawWorks’ brokerage offer for legal pro bono and support for small not-for-profit organisations, working to enhance their role and impact by enabling them to better deal with legal issues.

As a member of the LawWorks management team, the post holder will also contribute to the overall development and running of LawWorks.

The position will suit someone legally qualified, with strong relationship-management skills, who is interested in the legal and not-for-profit sectors and enjoys working in a busy and small team.  This is an exciting opportunity to gain valuable experience of the charity sector and pro bono, in a role offering variety and job satisfaction.

LawWorks is a relatively small organisation with 18 staff, including staff based in Wales and in the English regions. We are a busy and (for our size) complex charity, with a friendly team, a positive ethos, and a commitment to ensuring that LawWorks is a strong and efficient organisation and a great place to work.

In addition to encouraging and supporting pro bono delivery, we also work to address barriers to justice and to provide a 'policy voice' for pro bono.

More information about the role and how to apply is available on the LawWorks website.

The deadline for applications is 5.00pm on 31st May.

LawWorks is an equal opportunities employer. We encourage applications irrespective of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.

You can make a difference

Any lawyer has the ability (with the right temperament and commitment) to do pro bono that makes a difference - whether you are a lawyer in private practice, or an in-house lawyer working for a company, charity or for local or central government.

You may have legal expertise or knowledge which can help an individual, or a charity or not-for-profit organisation resolve a legal problem.

What you definitely will have is valuable training, skills and aptitudes which are readily translatable to real-life situations and problems – for example: the ability to explain a letter or form; to help someone understand what facts may be most relevant to their problem; or to draft a letter to, for example, to an employer.
