About the role

Mid-way between London and the South Coast, and covering large parts of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty, Mole Valley is an attractive, predominantly rural district which includes the market towns of Dorking and Leatherhead. It is a wonderful place to live, work, do business and spend leisure time in.

Mole Valley District Council is a dynamic and progressive local authority known for effective partnership working and taking the lead on service transformation and new ways of working. This is currently evidenced by, amongst other things, a wide range of high performing services, an ambitious asset investment strategy and a major regeneration project, Transform Leatherhead.

The Legal Services Team provides a comprehensive service to colleagues throughout the Council.  Our lawyers undertake varied and high-quality work which enables our colleagues to deliver public services and make a difference to local communities.   As a result of an internal promotion, we are looking for a contracts and procurement lawyer.

The successful candidate will be required to deal with matters including, but not limited to:

  • Providing advice and having conduct of legal files relating to contracts andprocurement matters
  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts to include construction contracts (JCT) and service contracts
  • Supporting corporate projects and advising on contract related governance issues, including shared service arrangements and inter-authority working
  • Acting as lead adviser on cross-authority or joint-authority initiatives/matters
  • Advising on procurements in compliance with the Public Contract Regulations and other EU Legislation

About you

You will:

  • be a qualified Solicitor (England and Wales) with or entitled to a practising certificate;
  • have knowledge and demonstrable relevant experience of contracts and procurement law.
  • be a team-player who is pro-active with a can-do approach;
  • have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively at all levels across the organisation, from elected Members, the Senior Leadership Team, Business Managers and external partners and stakeholders.

We will consider less experienced individuals with the right personal qualities and an excellent approach to client care who are able to grow into the role. Candidates from both the public and private sector are encouraged to apply for this position, as the practice’s current staff base is drawn from both sectors.

The role is a career graded post encompassing grades M3 and M4 (£36,086 - £40,388 (M3) and £41,438 - £45,462 per annum). Successful candidates who meet the threshold criteria for the relevant grade, as set out in the person specification, will generally be placed at the entry point for that grade.  There is an annual career grading application process to allow lawyers to advance to the next grade.
