Legal Specialist - General Counsel

The Office of the General Counsel handles a wide variety of domestic and international legal issues in many fields, including general corporate advice; advising with respect to domestic and international grantmaking; data privacy compliance and advising with respect to employment law, defamation, anti-bribery and corruption, intellectual property issues, and real estate matters.

Job Profile

  • Reviewing legal documents, drafting legal agreements, and other legal documents under various levels of supervision, including; Liaising with lawyers regarding legal compliance issues; Ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures; and
  • Identifying the need for new and revised templates and procedures that reflect the needs of programmes
  • Managing a client portfolio with primary responsibility for answering inquiries, drafting legal documentation, conducting research, and assisting with providing legal advice for various levels of issues, and other matters specific to the portfolio
  • Providing meeting support, (e.g., scheduling meetings, set-up for trainings, and ensuring meeting conference room and equipment are available)
  • Providing administrative support, (e.g. answering phones, printing, copying, scanning, filing, managing status charts, updating work files, and performing relevant record-keeping)
  • Participating in trainings, and acting as a specialist for established portfolio, which may include specialised knowledge in areas of law, and/or the needs of OSF programmes and/or OSF regions
  • Performing legal research to assist the legal team to prepare accurate and timely reports, legal advice (under supervision), case files, and other legal documents
  • Assisting with the support of the organisation’s contract management system, including review and prioritisation of enhancements
  • Using available technology to review compliance matters, including conflict of interest and matters relative to the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control
  • Managing a large amount of complex data using various tools and software applications (most using Salesforce), including running and analysing reports
  • Assisting with preparation of lists, status charts, and data management integral to the department
  • Organising legal files and materials so that they are easily accessed and retrieved without compromising the confidentiality or privacy of the information they contain
  • Developing internal relationships with OSF staff
  • Coordinating legal documents to be certified or legalised.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent experience/education
  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in a situation relevant to the duties of this role is typically required to develop the skills required for this role
  • Advanced level of written and spoken English is required
  • Demonstrated interest and experience with legal concepts
  • Familiarity with research concepts
  • Understanding of cross-cultural sensitivity
  • High level of attention to detail, and organisation skills
  • Familiarity with data management software – Salesforce, preferred
  • Superior Excel, data analysis, and/or database experience
  • Comfortable working independently and on a team
  • Experience with organising administrative tasks, (e.g., scheduling meetings, preparing expense reports, organising information, maintaining confidentiality)
  • Experience working with multiple clients to resolve legal issues, and interacting with high needs clients
  • Familiarity with the legal aspects of grant making preferred
  • Experience conducting legal research and analysis (i.e., comfortable reading and analysing legal documentation)
  • Experience with contract review and writing preferred.
