About CQC

CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. We make sure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and we encourage care services to improve. We monitor, inspect and regulate services to ensure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and we publish what we find to help people choose care.

About the role

As part of the Governance & Legal Services directorate, Lawyers in the Legal Services team provide robust, responsive and expert legal advice and support to CQC, covering all areas of law that potentially impact on the organisation and its work.

One of the roles is in our Central Legal Services team which provides legal advice on policy matters and wider corporate issues.  The other roles will provide legal advice to our inspection directorates on a variety of civil and criminal enforcement matters across Adult Social Care, Primary Medical Services and Hospitals. These roles will also involve undertaking urgent action which may include advocacy; and for prosecuting under our statutory powers contained within the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as well as the associated Regulations. All of the roles require flexibility to support wider Legal Services team activity. You will also be responsible for developing strong relations throughout the business, using your experience and knowledge to shape legal solutions.

About you

You will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives with either 2+ years post qualification experience OR newly qualified with proven substantial experience providing legal advice in a health and social care regulation setting or within the Public Sector.

You will have an established history of managing caseloads and proven regulatory and enforcement experience; civil and / or criminal.  You must be able to quickly adapt to and be able to advise on the work of CQC’s Inspection Directorates, the Registration function and have the ability to undertake urgent action. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Legal Services team as well as the wider organisation. You will have an eye for detail but also be able see the bigger picture; engaging and influencing colleagues in a supportive manner.

We are keen to hear from lawyers who have experience in policy matters; regulatory advisory work; undertaking criminal prosecutions (including having a solid track-record of advocacy experience); or with experience of undertaking cases before the First-tier Tribunal.

You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to secure and maintain the confidence of a range of Commission stakeholders. You will also be able to analyse risk and benefit within a fast-paced environment, and to reassess priorities on a continual basis. Reporting to the Senior Lawyer, you will also be required to support and develop colleagues across Legal Services.

Underpinning all of this, we expect you to be committed to CQC's values of Excellence, Caring, Integrity and Teamwork.
