Who we are

We are a government agency that tackles financial wrongdoing, helping to maximise returns to creditors and supporting those in financial distress. Spanning a huge spectrum of areas, our work touches on a wide range of issues including redundancy matters, civil director disqualifications, the winding up of companies in the public interest, operational legal advice and the bringing of criminal prosecutions. We are a dynamic team that is exposed to a multitude of challenges – and now you can join us, in a role that is undeniably career-enhancing.

What we are looking for

Within the Insolvency Service – which is an Executive Agency of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) – we currently have scope for two Civil Lawyers (one at Grade 6 and one at Grade 7) and two Criminal Lawyers (again, one at Grade 6 and one at Grade 7) to join the legal team.

Criminal Lawyer Roles. Our well-established Criminal Enforcement Team takes on a broad selection of criminal cases connected to individual and corporate insolvency proceedings, along with associated corporate fraud. You will see a case through its entire cycle – from initial investigation, right through to enforcement actions such as asset recovery. Forming close working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, your advice on the conduct of investigations will ensure case strategies are tightly formed, resulting in effective prosecutions. You will also prosecute matters stemming from BEIS’s regulatory functions, and undertake advocacy where appropriate. Supporting your prosecution colleagues in any cross-Whitehall initiatives, you will offer advice on the drafting of new criminal offences and enforcement strategies, thus shaping the future of the criminal law.

Civil Lawyer Roles. The Insolvency Service legal team has recently started to take on the Agency’s Civil Litigation work, primarily proceedings involving the disqualification of directors and in due course the winding up of those companies acting contrary to the public interest. Working within this team you will see a case through from issuing proceedings to trial, working with investigators, the Civil Proceedings Team and Counsel. This is an exciting time to join the formation of a new team of Civil Litigation lawyers.

To thrive in any of these varied roles, you will need to have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. As an experienced civil or criminal lawyer who is qualified to work in England and Wales, you will have a thorough understanding of the relevant law with specific reference to disclosure, procedure, and evidence, and you will have the ability to comprehensively grasp new areas of law. If you have knowledge of confiscation work/asset recovery or director disqualification/insolvency proceedings, that would be advantageous.

For the Grade 6 senior lawyer roles, you will have substantial legal experience in either civil or criminal litigation, and have strong leadership skills so as to be in a position to quickly drive forward performance in the respective teams.

For all roles, your enthusiasm for working in a progressive environment along with a willingness to travel to courts and regional offices will make you an essential part of the team during an exciting period of change.

So please do get in touch if you’d like to be considered for any of these positions, lawyer or senior lawyer, civil or criminal.
