Make a difference at the heart of Government
We are looking for bright, enthusiastic and ambitious lawyers, with a commitment to delivery for HMRC to join our teams in London, Manchester and Bristol.
Our work as HMRC lawyers impacts upon the lives of millions. With a case load that is both high profile and high value - including cases where more than £1bn of tax is at stake - our efforts help HMRC to achieve its vital purpose to collect the money that pays for the UK’s public services and to help families and individuals with targeted financial support.
Legal work at HMRC is cutting edge, challenging and rewarding. You will be part of a supportive legal team that handles a broad range of different areas of law including tax law, commercial law, general public law (including human rights, administrative law and freedom of information), insolvency law, criminal law, and our withdrawal from the EU.
As an HMRC advisory lawyer you will have the opportunity to provide advice on the interpretation and application of legislation and guidance on the full range of HMRC work. You are also likely to be involved in helping to make the law by providing legal advice on the development and implementation of tax policy, working on primary legislation and drafting secondary legislation, particularly in relation to the UK’s exit from the EU.
As an HMRC litigation lawyer you will have the opportunity to conduct litigation, including in the most significant and valuable cases, before tribunals and courts up to and including the Supreme Court.
You will also get the benefits that come with working in the Civil Service including an attractive pension package and annual leave allowances.
Who we’re looking for
Whether experienced or newly qualified, you will have strong intellectual skills, an ability to master new areas of law quickly, good interpersonal skills, strong delivery and team-working skills, self-awareness and be keen to use feedback to help you learn and develop as a professional.
We give you real responsibility from day one and while we welcome your previous experience or knowledge, we don’t expect you to have a tax or public law background and will help you acquire, develop and refine the legal skills you need using our comprehensive in-house training programme.
Posts will be based in London and Manchester and from 1 April 2019 in Bristol.
