Alleyn’s is an academically selective, independent, co-educational day school for over 1200 pupils aged 4-18, proud of its reputation for being friendly and caring and one of the very best co-educational independent schools in the country. Its primary aim is to provide ‘co-educational excellence with a first class, all-round education, to those of high intellectual promise and academic potential, regardless of background, race or creed’.

The Clerk plays a key role within the governance of the School and provides legal and administrative support to a variety of stakeholders. Directly responsible to the Chair of the Governing Board, the Clerk will serve the Governors, advising and supporting the Chair, Committee Chairs and Governors individually and collectively and carrying out their instructions. The Clerk will also work closely with the Head and his Senior Management Team to help the Executive and Governors to make decisions in a proper manner.

Candidates are likely to have a strong legal understanding of the education and/or charity sectors as well as strong financial acumen. He or she will be proactive, organised and hard-working, with the intellect and capability to work with a committed and skilled board of governors. Previous experience of working in a school is not essential, but an interest in education is important.

This is a part-time role and the Clerk should expect to commit to the role approximately one day a week. They will be required to attend meetings of Governing Board and Sub-Committees (including an annual Away Day in London), as well as participating in a very small number of school events during the year. The individual will also need to be available by telephone/email for consultation outside these times as required.
