Shape the development and assure the legal integrity of the Commission’s regulatory policy, by providing expert legal advice to support the Commission’s operational projects, policy proposals, and guidance to charities and those who run them.

Work at the Charity Commission and you’ll make a difference every day. To the 167,000 charities of all shapes and sizes that we regulate across England and Wales. To the trustees we partner with and advise. And to the people and causes that benefit from the £10bn generously donated each year by the public.

We help charities working in every community and across the world to meet their legal obligations and give the public confidence that their money is put to good use. It’s a huge responsibility – and one that gives every member of our workforce enormous influence and impact. Now, as the sector comes under increasing scrutiny, the scope and profile of our work is growing and changing. Fast.

The Policy Lawyer is a key member of the Legal Services Directorate, which provides clear, expert, risk-based legal advice to colleagues across the Commission.

Under the direction of the Head of Legal Policy, you will support the development and assure the legal integrity of the Commission’s operational projects, policy proposals, and guidance. The role also offers the opportunity to shape the development of the legal and regulatory framework for charities in England and Wales in line with the Commission’s strategic priorities and operational goals.

Your work is likely to include:

  • Providing authoritative legal advice to support the development of new and revised guidance for charities;
  • Assessing and engaging with developments affecting charities, including by commenting on relevant government consultations, policy proposals and draft legislation;
  • Ensuring that the Commission’s regulatory policy approach and operational projects are informed by and developed in accordance with the legal framework; and
  • Representing the Commission at meetings with government departments and other external stakeholders.

You will be expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of charity, trust and public law and be capable of advising colleagues at the most senior levels within the Commission, including at Board and Board committee meetings.

You will need to be qualified to practice as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales.

In return we provide:

  • An additional London Allowance of £4245
  • A family friendly working environment offering outstanding flexibility in working patterns
  • A generous Civil Service pension scheme
  • ‘Perkbox’ scheme free mobile phone insurance, discounts on gym membership, cinema tickets and restaurants etc
  • Interest-free season ticket loan or bicycle loan after two moths
  • Exceptional Development Opportunities aiding your career advancement.
