We have a unique opportunity for a qualified Solicitor or Barrister to join us as Deputy Director of Joint Legal Services for both West Midlands Police and Staffordshire Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire.

The Team

Working alongside experienced lawyers, you will be based in the heart of the West Midlands and will provide high quality legal services to more than 10000 officers and staff. The Joint Legal Services acts for the Chief Constables of Staffordshire and West Midlands Police on legal matters in an advisory capacity and through representation at courts, tribunals and public inquiries. The team ensures the cost effective provision of an agreed range of legal services, which best supports the aims and corporate objectives of each force.

The Role

Joint Legal Services advises on a range of matters including high profile investigations, civil litigation, public law, inquests and inquiries, employment law, discrimination, information law, commercial and procurement and operational policing matters including advice on counter-terrorism. The role requires you to be able to lead a team of lawyers, set the strategy for legal services, analyse information critically, provide effective written and oral advice, organise a complex workload and work collaboratively with a variety of colleagues and other stakeholders in a publically accountable environment. It’s important for you to have the aptitude and potential to thrive and lead in this environment. This role is primarily based in central Birmingham at our West Midlands Police Lloyd House Headquarters (with the need to work from Staffordshire Headquarters as required). You will also lead, support and develop the Joint Legal Services team.

The Candidate

We are looking for a lawyer with a positive attitude who can lead a team, be able to work under pressure and offer practical solutions. With an ability to carry a varied caseload you will be a qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales who has at least five years post-qualification experience. Being highly organised, working with minimum supervision and meeting tight deadlines are crucial for this role. You should also be able to display sound judgement and analytical skills.

The ideal candidate for this role will:

• Be a qualified Solicitor/Barrister with substantial post qualification experience  5PQE.

• Have extensive experience operating as a senior legal professional.

• Have solid knowledge and understanding of policing legislation, regulations and best practice.

• Have experience of leading a team.

• Be innovative, inspirational, focussed and flexible within the working environment.

• Have excellent report writing, budget management, and numerical skills.

• Be an excellent communicator with exceptional interpersonal, negotiating and influencing skills.
