Salary: £50,668 - £58,844 pa

Location: London

Hours: Full time

Contract: Permanent

The Competiton and Markets Authority (CMA) are seeking experienced lawyers with expertise in either competion and consumer law, regulatory law, or state aide casework to join the Know-how team. With markets changing fast, and the prospect of legal change related to the EU exit, this is an exciting time to join us.

The CMA is the UK’s world-leading government body established to make sure competition works in consumers’ favour and businesses treat their customers fairly. What we do really matters and makes a difference to people’s lives, but is only possible by having an effective know-how offering that ensures we are able to make the robust descissions that need to be made.

As a lawyer in the Know-how team, you will build up, maintain and promote the CMA’s know-how offering (internally and externally), so that knowledge is effectively shared, ensuring lessons are learnt from past cases and examples of best practice are made accessible to staff in a user-friendly manner. For example, you will take the lead on preparing, maintaining and using banks of precedent documents, templates, internal and external guidance documents, know-how talks and monthly bulletins. This role will allow you the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of work across the CMA portfolio including:

  • Competition law enforcement (e.g. the recent paroxetine and the phenytoin cases).
  • Consumer law enforcement (e.g. tackling misleading online reviews and endorsements, unfair terms for cloud storage and enforcing consumer law in the Higher Education sector).
  • Merger control:  (e.g. the recently concluded Eurotunnel case and the current ICE/Trayport litigation).
  • Markets work: (e.g. current care homes and DCTs market studies and recent Energy and Banking market investigations).
  • Regulatory work: ensuring fair conduct in the appeals and references to the CMA in regulated sectors – often concerning key price controls.

You may also have the opportunity from time-to-time to fulfil a delivery or legal advisor function; that is, to be responsible for project managing a case, or acting as a lawyer embedded in a specific case team.

We welcome applications from lawyers with significant experience in any of the above practice areas, who also have a proven track record in building, and contributing to an effective knowledge sharing culture.

Closing date for applications: 20 August 2018.

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds.
