THE ROLE

The Data Protection Practice sits within the IT Telecoms & Competition team and IT and Telecoms lawyers who carry out stand-alone commercial, technology and telecoms work, as well transactional support, for a diverse mix of clients ranging from blue chip global brands to smaller enterprises with unique business models and technologies, as well as their customers across various sectors.

The Data Protection Practice is a multi-disciplinary team working closely with members in Employment, Pensions, Disputes and Reputation management teams, in UK and internationally.

The firm has been advising clients on data protection and privacy issues for many years and has a well-established Data Protection team operating across its international offices.

ABOUT YOU

An associate who is passionate about this area of law is sought to join this busy and talented team which covers every aspect of this ever growing area of legal practice including data compliance, assessment and audits, security breach incidents, data transfers, social media and cloud computing issues.

They act for an enviable client base from leading technology and telecoms clients through to FTSE 100 and blue-chip institutions.

The firm can offer truly interesting work with the opportunity to be fully immersed in practice growth through to various international initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have:

Strong academic credentials

2+ years of experience advising in the areas of data protection, privacy law and other areas of information law

Strong understanding of relevant UK and EC laws (Data Protection Act 1998, Privacy & Electronic Communications Regulations, Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000

Experience will cover drafting, reviewing, negotiating agreements containing information and data protection law clauses

Ability to develop innovative approach to legal issues in support of strategic business initiatives and objectives

In-house experience (including secondment) would be an advantage

Strong commercial awareness and analytical skills

Roll out of business wide privacy policies and compliance programmes

Experience of training to develop a culture of compliance within data protection

Understanding of proposed changes to data protection through EU Regulation and appreciation of global data protection laws

There may be scope to undertake some commercial and IT work but the primary focus of the role will be within the data protection area.
