Your new company
A Public Services Organisation in Southampton has a Legal function that sits within the Corporate and Business Support Directorate and provides the professional support services, for the whole of the organisations support to achieve its stated mission.

Your new role
As the Head of Legal you will deliver the provision of a robust and pragmatic legal function that can deliver advice on a broad range of frequently complex issues. The role will lead the provision of all types of legal advice in order to give the Directors assurance that there is effective management, across all legal and contracting issues. You will have oversight of the end to end commercial and research contracting process, from supply chain to customer contracting. You will be responsible for developing the overall strategy and leadership for all legal activities, including governance, risk, compliance and assurance. The Head of Legal will play a critical role in the provision of advice on Intellectual Property matters; including managing and protecting the IP portfolio and commercialisation opportunities. The role provides leadership and development of a seamless, effective and efficient commercially aware contracting team, delivering a high quality, flexible and professional responsive service. This includes developing and establishing, the overall legal liabilities within a well-documented and controlled risk assurance and insurance framework. Included is the management of the compliance team who deal with Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

What you'll need to succeed
You will be legally qualified with significant experience to enable the confidence to work without professional legal supervision. You will have experience of working effectively with senior management within either the public sector, third sector, higher education, or in a corporate legal role and will need to demonstrate the ability to deliver a high standard of legal advice against a full range of legal, policy and regulatory obligations. You will have excellent written and oral communication skills, with a high degree of maturity and self-reliance and be able to cope with regularly changing priorities while still delivering a high standard of service. You will be able to provide concise and clear advice on complex legal and compliance matters with the ability to influence others at a more senior level. Staff management and the ability to lead and influence others is vital and in person you will have gravitas, be credible and able to communicate clearly and effectively.
