As a Legal Advisor, you’ll ensure the UK can deliver a truly world-class trade remedies system, while building invaluable, high-profile, global experience and trade remedies legislation. Your UK and WTO legislative and policy knowledge will be invaluable throughout investigations. Duties include providing high quality legal analysis and advice on technically complex issues such as the UK legislative and policy framework, the operation of complex trade remedies legislation and the related investigative processes. You will conduct research into legal, technical and procedural matters in relation to new TRA proceedings. You’ll manage Assistant Legal Advisors, and collaborate closely with stakeholders. Some travel may be involved.

Requirements

You’re a natural communicator, able to influence a wide range of audiences at various levels of seniority.

It is essential that you can provide evidence and examples for each of the following selection criteria in your application and/or at interview:

  • Degree educated (2:1 or above) or evidence of an equivalent high level academic or professional achievement.
  • Fully qualified lawyer entitled to practise in the UK or willingness to sit and pass the QLTT on appointment
  • Significant knowledge of and practical post-qualification experience in one or more of the following: international trade, UK and EU competition or consumer law, regulatory law or State aid casework, together with knowledge and appreciation of applicable public law.
  • Significant experience delivering high quality analysis, providing case advice and report writing.

It is desirable if you can provide evidence and examples of:

  • Experience of working in organisations specifically in the regulatory or administrative field;
  • An in-depth knowledge of trade remedies in the WTO and/or EU context and the WTO dispute settlement system; and/or
  • Experience of advising in high-profile public or commercial circles
  • Excellent communication skills, experience of dealing with internal and external stakeholders, working with project delivery teams.

Person specification

In particular, we are looking for the following:

  • Experience of dealing with internal and external stakeholders, and working with operational teams (ideally advising on investigations)
  • The ability to think communicate advice effectively both in writing and orally.
  • The ability to think strategically and creatively, see legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly
  • Reliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk
  • Sound analysis using secure legal research to produce timely and fit for purpose advice
  • Experience of line management.
  • An understanding of the role of lawyers in Government.
