Tate aims to be the most artistically adventurous and culturally inclusive global art museum. We deliver this aim through activities in our four galleries across the UK (Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives, Tate Britain and Tate Modern), our digital platforms and collaborations with our national and international partners. As we enter a new stage of Tate’s development following the completion of major capital developments at Tate Modern and Tate St Ives and under the leadership of a new Director, Maria Balshaw, this is an exciting moment to be joining Tate.

Reporting directly to our Head of Legal, you will be an experienced barrister or solicitor, able to assist our legal department in providing a first-class advisory and support service to Tate’s Trustees and staff at all levels. As part of a small in-house legal team that includes Tate’s IP Manager and IP Officer, you will work across a broad remit ensuring Tate’s compliance with statutory and legal requirements. You will support the Head of Legal with reviewing and developing Tate’s contracts and legal procedures in relation to exhibition and loan agreements, sponsorship agreements, donation agreements, consultancy agreements and supply contracts and all other agreements necessary for Tate’s business needs and objectives. You will participate in Tate’s Freedom of Information Group and advise on information law matters including data protection as well as FOI and the Environmental Information Regulations. You will also handle litigation and instruct and manage the provision of external legal advice, ensuring best value for money.

You will need demonstrable and substantial experience in contract, company and commercial law, knowledge of charity law and an awareness of the legal issues facing a national gallery. You will have excellent problem solving, drafting, presentation, and communication skills with the ability to apply your broad range of legal experience in a practical and pragmatic way to a wide range of situations. We are looking for someone with business acumen and the ability to manage a busy caseload and work under pressure to manage a range of projects simultaneously whilst maintaining personal effectiveness during times of pressure and challenging situations. Up-to-date knowledge of the Freedom of Information and General Data Protection Regulations and associated legislation is also important. An awareness of and commitment to diversity and inclusion, with the ability to contribute to an inclusive and respectful culture at Tate is essential.
