Crown Counsel (Civil)

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

2 years FTC commencing ASAP

£40k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, taxable in St Helena; a tax free International Supplement will also apply

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. With the opening of a new international airport last year there is now a weekly scheduled flight from Johannesburg.

The island’s team of Law Officers is currently made up of the Attorney General, a Solicitor General, Crown Counsel (Community Care) Crown Counsel (Criminal) and Crown Counsel (Commercial), two trainees and a legal executive along with a Legal Officer and a full-time Legislative Draftsperson working remotely from Florida.

Under the Attorney General you will have conduct of Government civil litigation and must pro-actively contribute towards the provision of comprehensive, reliable, and timely legal advice to all organs of government. Assisting in the lifecycle of the procurement process including drafting of all agreements, you will advise on all aspects of general common law (mainly civil) and conduct litigation in civil and employment matters. This includes drafting pleadings and court documents with court appearances up to Court of Appeal. You will also provide advice throughout government on contracts, leases and land, human resources and employment matters and offer guidance, support and supervision to the two trainees.

As a substantially experienced UK/ Commonwealth qualified barrister or solicitor, you will have a background in civil litigation, in particular employment and medical negligence work and of running a caseload. Your strong analytical and communication skills should be complemented by a flexible approach.

We offer an extensive benefits package with 30 days leave pa, fare paid travel, freight, pension contribution and relocation allowance (see overseas vacancy information). An application form can be found at www.sthelenacareers.com where further information can also be found, or you may contact Kedell Worboys on 0203 818 7610 or email: shgukrep@sthelenagov.com. This is where applications must be sent and received by 27 Nov 2018. Interviews will be held in London.
