Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced lawyer to serve as lead counsel for our EMEA theatre.  Our Lead Counsel, EMEA will be a key member of our legal department’s management, initially reporting to the SVP & General Counsel as we build and mature our legal operations in theatre and then reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Global Operations as part of our Global Operations practice group of regional theatre legal leads worldwide.

Our Lead Counsel, EMEA, will have solid line oversight of all other Global Operations regional counsel in theatre and dashed-line functional daily management and oversight of all lawyers in theatre from the Transactions, Corporate, Litigation and IP practice groups. The Lead Counsel, EMEA will work with the SVP & General Counsel and the Assistant General Counsel, Global Operations, to anticipate the legal needs of the EMEA region as our company continues to grow and to assist in hiring and training excellent legal talent in theatre in coordination with practice group leads. The Lead Counsel, EMEA will be vested with principal responsibility to oversee all legal aspects of the EMEA theatre in partnership with EMEA theatre business leadership, to serve as a strategic partner for EMEA business leadership, and to draw upon the resources of the Legal department worldwide to assure that EMEA has all legal assistance needed for its success.

The role will focus initially on transactional practice to immerse the successful candidate in our business, and then transition to a wider role with people and team management responsibilities increasing as we hire new legal talent in theatre for the Transactions and other practice groups. The Lead Counsel, EMEA will be responsible in coordination with the Compliance department and Legal’s compliance counsel for monitoring compliance issues in EMEA, to be aware of market, regulatory and competitive risks and opportunities, and to serve as the Company’s principal legal representative in theatre.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide variety of commercial contracts with company’s customers, suppliers and vendors
  • Serve as the principal legal advisor and partner to the EMEA business leadership
  • Interact with other Legal Department staff members, company employees, outside counsel and opposing counsel to complete tasks
  • With respect to the Company’s customer agreements, assist global sales team to successfully close transactions in a manner consistent with company’s policies and best interests
  • Perform other general corporate law functions and provide other general corporate law advice, as needed
  • Handle all legal matters relating to the Company’s regional operations, under the supervision of the AGC, Global Operations. Monitor changes in laws impacting Company and provide proactive advice as needed
  • Assist Corporate Counsel, Ethics & Compliance, in training, monitoring and enforcing Company’s policies for ethics and legal compliance
  • Support continuous improvements of our internal process and work product to increase value for internal and external clients
  • Provide other legal support to the General Counsel, Managing Counsel, Senior Corporate Counsel and Corporate Counsel and complete additional assignments as needed
  • Transition from a player coach to a people manager of diverse practice group teams in EMEA theatre, to leverage legal staffing to maximum efficiency and effectiveness
  • Serve as a role model and leader for the EMEA legal team, leading by example and building a “can do” esprit de corps

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited law school and currently licensed to practice law in an EMEA  jurisdiction and qualified to practice law 10+ years of related experience in private practice (law firm) and/or in-house

 Experience

  • Generalist experience preferred, with demonstrated experience in transactional practice and business law practice
  • Fluently bilingual/multilingual in both written and spoken English and one or more other language strongly preferred.  Ability to draft contracts and carry out legal negotiations in English and other language (s) preferred
  • Significant experience with cross-border/international legal matters
  • Experience working with U.S companies and foreign companies, and understanding of U.S. culture and global business relations
  • Work experience doing legal business in EMEA
  • Experience working closely with an executive team and senior management
  • Experience managing employees or exceptional people skills
  • Experience managing outside counsel preferred
  • Experience with and internal sales and marketing organizations preferred
  • Up to 20% domestic and international travel

Skills

  • Familiarity with tech/IP industry preferred
  • Ability to work remotely, especially during global travel, but principally resident in London office
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to lead or participate in conference calls to negotiate agreements and lead team
  • Ability to work both independently, as a high energy self-starter with strong work ethic, as well as collaboratively as team player
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to function in a highly confidential environment, with a demonstrated ability to think globally
  • Excellent analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities with “can do” attitude, work cross-functionally and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to manage junior lawyers by assisting in recruiting, training and supervising and providing quality control and constructive suggestions for improvement
  • Strong reputation and orientation for integrity and ability to balance business interests with need to exercise independent judgment and to raise (and escalate as needed) potentially sensitive or contentious issues
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, as described above and as modified from time to time based on the needs of the Company
  • Able to manage multiple priorities with “can do” attitude, work cross-functionally and meet tight deadlines
  • High level of emotional and professional maturity and ability to triage limited time and leverage team resources
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team and other practice group leaders, to adopt a shared sense of mission and to avoid silos of practice

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required
  • Experience with GoToMeeting a plus
  • Personable, self-starting team player with a friendly demeanor and great sense of humor
  • Proactive, organized, self-motivated and self-disciplined
  • Experience managing legal professionals a plus
  • Willing and able to work in a fast-paced, emerging technology company environment
