Do you want a Head of Legal Position with the autonomy to help shape the legal strategy of one of the UK's largest travel providers? There is also an excellent opportunity to handle a diverse caseload of legal matters allowing more freedom then conventional private practice.

The Company

The organisation in question is one of the largest independent Travel Companies in the UK and operates Worldwide in hundreds of different locations. They have been established for close to 50 years, and their 2018 figures were their best year to date. Their consistent yearly performances have made them not only one of the biggest in terms of headcount, but also on services, revenue, and related business ventures.

The company has been recognised with a multitude of accolades by numerous traveling publications and national newspapers. They have performed particularly well in Tour Operator categories and for their Travel Expertise.

To compound their financial and industry recognition, they also boast one of the most flexible Internal Progression Structures, allowing them to retain their staff at an unprecedented rate. It is not unusual for individuals who embody the organisations ethos to come in from varying sectors and take their career off in an entirely new direction.

The Role

The organisation is seeking to hire their first ever Head of Legal. The position is unique as historically the company has had in-house Solicitors who work closely with external legal counsel. However, they are now in a position to hire a Head of Legal to direct the company's Legal strategy and define the role they desire in agreement with the Company agenda.

One of the most interesting aspects of this role is the variety of work you would be responsible for. It is a hybrid role in which the legal responsibilities will vary between the following primary categories:

  • Advising on the legal requirements of the organisations Property Investments, both current and with the future in mind.
  • Handling the legal requirements of commercial contracts in conjunctions with suppliers and distributors.
  • Advising on the legal requirements of Employment matters and HR.
  • Being able to advise on the Regulatory, Competition and Intellectual Property of the company in order to protect the company's best interests.
  • Giving input on litigation risk and escalated legal concerns.

It is important to recognise that the company is not expecting the candidate in question to possess an enhanced skill sets across all these areas. However, proficiency and interest in developing a more diverse skill set are essential.

It is also important to recognise that this role will also involve working closely alongside the Head of Finance, Head of Data Protection, Head of Client Relations, and the CEO in order to shape the company agenda. Their will also be the need to liaise with external counsel were necessary and had input on the legal spend of the company.

The Requirements

  • You will be a Solicitor with at least 2-years PQE.
  • You will have interest and some experience in Real Estate, Commercial Contracts, Employment, Litigation, and Regulatory matters.
  • You will be wanting to help shape a very large companies Legal Strategy and embed yourself with the company.
  • You will have excellent communication skills and be comfortable being involved in business making decisions.
  • You will ideally be based in London.
  • Salary is between £70,000 to £120,000 with a bonus in place. Salary would be largely dependent on the experience of the candidate.
