Hackney and Newham, London

Closing date: 21 January 2019 at 11.30pm

Are you a qualified housing solicitor with management experience? Then join Shelter as a Managing Solicitor and you could soon be leading our London team that provides a viable, high quality legal service to homeless people and other people in housing need.

Housing has become a national emergency that affects us all. At Shelter, we believe a safe home isn’t just a fundamental need - it should be a right. That’s why, more than ever, this year and beyond we are leading the way to a safe home. We’re going to rally the country to join us on our mission to rise up, speak with a united voice, pick up the pieces and fix the underlying problem. Together we can bring fundamental change. And no matter how long it takes, we will succeed.  Our Legal Services Team have never been needed more. Indeed, they will play a huge part in helping us to achieve our mission.

About the Role:

With an enviable national reputation for excellence in the provision of housing law and over 100 fee earners and support staff, including over 40 solicitors nationally, Legal Services at Shelter is career enhancing to say the least.

Currently, we have vacancies for two Managing Solicitors - one to head up the Hackney team and the other to lead Newham. We won’t pretend these roles are easy. You’ll need to manage a team of solicitors, caseworkers and administrators, deal with personnel issues, ensure that Legal Aid Agency contract requirements and performance targets are met and provide professional support and supervision. You’ll also carry your own caseload of housing litigation. But, if you’re able to do all that, we can promise you a varied and challenging environment where your legal expertise will get every chance to shine and your input will have a direct impact on the lives of people facing homelessness.

About you

As well as substantial experience of handling a wide range of housing cases in both the public and private sector, you will have in-depth knowledge of issues like homelessness, security of tenure, anti-social behaviour and possessions proceedings, as well as Legal Aid supervisor status in housing and debt. The ability to manage teams, achieve targets, as well as good communication and problem-solving skills and have a proactive, results-driven approach.

Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, the possibility of flexible working, enhanced family friendly policies and significant opportunities for learning and development.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. We campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We're here so no-one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.

Safeguarding is everyone’s business. Shelter is committed to protecting the health, wellbeing and human rights of those we support, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. All our staff will be expected to observe professional standards of behaviour and conduct their work in line with our Safeguarding Policies.
