Solicitor to the Scottish Government and Head of the Scottish Government Legal Directorate

Senior Civil Service

Edinburgh

Circa £93k

The Solicitor to the Scottish Government is the principal non-Ministerial legal advisor to the Scottish Government and leads the Scottish Government Legal Directorate (SGLD). This is a unique opportunity to make a significant contribution to Scottish public law and life, at a time of unprecedented change and challenge. As well as being a key role in the Scottish Government and wider Scottish public legal sector, it is a chance to join the senior leadership team at a crucial time as Scotland takes forward an ambitious programme of legislation, constitutional reform and public service improvement. As part of that team, you will make a strong professional and corporate contribution to realising our ambitions for the organisation.

We are looking for an engaged and inclusive leader and lawyer who can bring both professional expertise and acumen and practical problem-solving ability to advising and supporting the Law Officers, Ministers and senior officials of the Scottish Government; who will lead and develop SGLD and its teams as a professional and highly effective in-house legal service and who will make practical, outcomes-focused contributions across the work of government, as part of a multi-disciplinary team of Directors. This director post is both a head of profession and a key strategic influencing role and the Solicitor will need to demonstrate significant experience at a senior level gained in a large and complex organisation.

You must have excellent legal skills, particularly in relation to public and administrative law, with a firm understanding of devolution and the wider Government and Parliamentary context in Scotland and the ability to operate effectively within it. Applicants must be Advocates or Solicitors admitted in Scotland, or qualified to be admitted as such; a successful candidate not yet admitted will be expected to seek such admission before taking up post.

For further information about the role and details of how to apply, please go to: www.work-for-scotland.org quoting reference IRC66245. Alternatively, please contact Carolyn Murdoch, Scottish Government Senior Staff Team (carolyn.murdoch@gov.scot).

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 26 February at midnight.

We welcome applications from all suitably qualified people and aim to employ a diverse workforce which reflects the people of Scotland.
