Job Details

This is an exciting opportunity to join Barking and Dagenham Council, winner of the LGC Council of the Year 2018 award thanks to its impressive commercial growth and transformation plans.  The Legal Practice has been a pioneering trading practice since 2011 and plays an important role in the transformation journey.

The Council is now delivering its ambitious transformation and growth plans, through local authority trading companies, such as Be First and Reside, to deliver regeneration, new housing, and school improvements.  Our procurement and regeneration teams are at the heart of supporting these ambitious plans. The successful candidate will be part of an innovative and collaborative team of professionals dedicated to making a positive contribution to our clients, their ambitious corporate agendas and our external public-sector clients.

We are seeking a suitably qualified lawyer (a solicitor, barrister, or fellow of CILEx) to support the work of our commercial law team within our busy, collegiate and well-regarded legal practice.

You will have experience of advising on contract law and drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts. Experience in public procurement law and drafting various public-sector agreements for works, services and supplies is desirable. You will provide advice to a range of internal and external clients, including the Council’s trading companies, and other public bodies. You will have access to and advise senior officers of the Council, and our client organisations.

As a member of the team you must be self-motivated and have the ability to work well on your own without much supervision.  You must have experience of providing oral and written legal advice at the required level and have experience of managing a busy caseload. You will be able to comply with chargeable hour requirements and undertake your own file maintenance in line with Lexcel accreditation requirements.

A collaborative and commercial approach is at the heart of our service. Therefore, the ability to work collaboratively and build positive working relationships with team members, peers and senior client officers at all levels is essential.  Your influence will extend beyond the possibilities of a traditional in-house service.

Our Legal Practice is recognised nationally for best practice in the public sector.  We were a finalist in the Legal Services category for the Municipal Journal Awards 2017 and Highly Commended in the Legal Team of the Year category at the Lawyers in Local Government Awards 2018.

We offer a supportive and collaborative environment.  We offer competitive benefits including a local government pension and flexible working arrangements.

For an informal discussion of this role, please contact Suzan Yildiz, Deputy Head of Legal Services (Commercial) on 0208 227 5364 or Kayleigh Eaton, Senior Contracts & Procurement Laywer on 020 8227 2239.
