2 years FTC commencing as soon as possible
£40,000 pa, taxable in St Helena
A tax free International Supplement will also apply (ranging 15,800 – 22,100 per annum)
A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK, poised for transformation with the imminent construction of an airport.
The Attorney General’s Chambers is currently made up of the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, Crown Counsel (Community Care), Crown Counsel (Criminal), Crown Counsel (Commercial), Crown Counsel (Civil), a Legal Executive, a full-time Legislative Draftsperson working remotely and two admin support staff.
Under the Attorney General you will primarily have conduct of safeguarding (children and adults), housing, mental health, freedom of information, data protection and education matters. You will be required to have expertise in at least one of the above areas of law and be willing to expand your practice. You will be flexible and a team player, committed to contribute towards the provision of comprehensive, reliable, and timely legal advice to all organs of government. You will advise all Directorates (in particular Safeguarding, Education and Health Directorates) and Corporate Services.
As an experienced Commonwealth qualified barrister, solicitor or advocate, you will need to be able to be flexible and deal with areas of law outside your area of expertise.
The role will include advocacy and providing written and oral advice and guidance to Elected Members of Legislative Council, The Governor and to the various Government Departments.
Experience of public sector organisations and of running a caseload with limited litigation support would be desirable. Strong analytical and communication skills are required for this role.
