Legal services have never mattered more. In an increasingly uncertain world, people need all the help they can get, and that means the way the legal sector works is changing. If you want to shape the future and make a real difference for people and businesses in England and Wales, joining the Solicitors Regulation Authority is the opportunity you have been looking for.

We regulate the solicitor profession in England and Wales, balancing public protection with regulatory arrangements that support an increasingly vibrant, diverse and competitive legal sector. With over 192,000 solicitors and some 10,400 law firms to oversee, we know that high professional standards are the priority. Our transformational reform programme and new Corporate Strategy build on those standards, as we work to open up the legal market to provide high quality, accessible, affordable services for all those who need them. Part of that is our commitment to changing how solicitors qualify, so that the public can have real confidence that the profession meets the standards that must be at the heart of their practice. We have, of course, more to do to deliver modern, forward looking, customer centred regulation, fit for the future.

The Deputy General Counsel will be a key support to the senior management team, working closely with the executive team to lead on the provision of strategic legal advice on matters of regulatory reform, governance, compliance and policy development. As well as directing high profile and complex cases and embedding good practise in regulatory decision making across the organisation.

We are looking for a qualified solicitor or barrister, able to demonstrate substantial career achievements. Candidates will be fully versed in the legal issues impacting upon regulators, and as an accomplished legal professional, you will bring substantial personal credibility and experience in law; including public law, organisational governance and compliance, regulatory policy and the UK legislative process.

Politically sensitive with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, you will be able to build and navigate stakeholder relationships effectively. You will represent the SRA at a senior level, leading meetings, roundtables and speaking engagements. You will be able to analyse and explain complex legal issues with confidence, clarity, and precision externally as well as internally and to both legal and non-legal audiences.

In return you will get the opportunity for intellectual challenge through managing your own complex and high-profile cases, contribute to strategic regulatory change, represent the SRA at senior levels and work collegiately with staff across a variety of areas of the organisation.
Whilst this is both a senior and specialist role, we are supportive of helping you achieve a balance between your personal and professional life. If you would like to discuss the role, our culture or scope to work flexibly, we can arrange for this to happen - contact us to arrange a chat, in confidence at
