My client is a leading UK costs firm which provides high quality legal advice tailored to both businesses and individuals. They address the specific objectives of each client through our flair and technical expertise and offer a personal service founded on a strong team ethic.

Their main areas of practice are dispute resolution, corporate and commercial, real estate, private client and family. They have several multi-disciplinary teams concentrating on a variety of industry sectors, I am looking for candidates with various skill sets.  As well as being proficient in general costs matters including budgeting and costs management, I have a need for skills in solicitor/client; ATE insurance; Retainers; Clinical Negligence and Commercial. In these areas, they are acknowledged for our unparalleled market insight.

Their clients range from private individuals, owner managed businesses and start-ups to multi-national corporations, public companies, professional partnerships, banks and financial institutions.

The Role

My client are looking to appoint a Costs Manager to grow a Costs Unit to support their contentious teams across the firm. This is a new role, and a great opportunity for the right candidate to help shape and improve our costs offering and practice and client service. The Costs Unit will sit within the Central Teams. It will support practice areas including Commercial Dispute Resolution, Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence, Court of Protection, Family, Employment and Travel.

The Candidate

The appointed Costs Manager will be a dynamic senior Costs Lawyer with significant experience of all aspects of both inter partes costs and solicitor/client costs work, who is comfortable dealing with costs in a range of legal specialisms. The successful candidate will work well in a team environment, and will ideally have experience of training, supporting and managing other costs lawyers. The appointed Costs Manager will demonstrate leadership skills and a genuinely commercial approach, focussed on obtaining the best possible result for our clients and the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cost and draft all bill types using relevant costing methods and software. Record all time spent using Time Tracking software and ensure prompt contact with client wherever necessary. Ensure all time dependant and legal requirements are met. Complete all internal and external documentation and route completed files to Administration for return.
  • Generate new bill and enter all data. Log into CCMS system using supplied login credentials and manually transfer data from bill. Create narrative, generate and complete all relevant documentation and route to client.
  • Take instructions from client and prepare for service. Generate bundle of relevant documents and route to paying party. Negotiate with paying party for client and route advice. Generate Replies when necessary. Make all necessary recommendations to client.
  • Take instructions from client and prepare advice following service. Negotiate with receiving party for client and route advice. Generate Points of Dispute where necessary. Make recommendations to client.
  • Liaise with counsel / solicitors / clients and give advice where required. Liaise with necessary legal bodies. Share knowledge with staff.
  • Deal with applications to the Court for Part 8 proceedings, Default Costs Certificates, Application for Payment on Account, Application for Oral Hearing and Application for Provisional and/or Detailed Assessment and any other relevant application. Liaise with Client where necessary.
  • Create Court Bundles by generating required copies of all documentation together with an Index. Route copies to all relevant parties. Attend Court with senior staff member and assist where required.
  • Research relevant aspects of job, including technical costing issues, using all available facilities and carry out internal training of current staff where required. Cover all aspects of Costs Law and Law that may indirectly affect costs decisions.
  • Work with Case Management software and complete all relevant department documentation where required.
  • Assist in case updates and general marketing if appropriate. Research relevant Costs Information and inform relevant members of staff.
