Role Purpose

An opportunity has arisen for a Claims Handler/Paralegal based in our Holiday Travel Claims Department to manage a caseload of Personal Injury/Contractual/Out of jurisdiction/ Claimant work.

Part of the role will involve assisting with risk assessments and setting up new claims on the case management system.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has strong interpersonal and practical skills and an ability to absorb information and learn quickly.

The candidate will be someone who is looking to carve a career in Travel Law and Personal Injury. The candidate will be highly motivated and willing to learn and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for detail. A Travel Law background is not essential as ongoing training and education will be given.

The role will initially be to provide support to experienced Travel Lawyers by assisting progression of maturing cases and undertaking fee-earning work within the firm’s Travel and Holiday Claims Personal Injury Department. The work comprises predominantly of personal injury claims involving accidents that occur abroad. In addition to this the role will include running and managing a number of out of jurisdiction and contractual claims of their own.

The candidate will be expected to achieve financial targets, both in respect of fee income and recording chargeable hours and to contribute towards the success of the department as determined by reference to the Department’s business plan.  The candidate will be expected to actively engage in the Department’s marketing and contribute to business development.

The role will involve learning about Travel law and civil procedure to then enable the candidate to progress within the department.

This will include but is not limited to the responsibilities below;

Key Responsibilities:

  • To assist senior fee-earners to progress cases.
  • Setting up new files on the case management system.
  • Scanning the incoming post for the team
  • To take responsibility for the conduct a Travel/Holiday personal injury cases from initial instruction to conclusion.
  • To maintain high standards in the conduct of all work and maintain the highest level of professional standards and client care at all times.
  • Promote and actively participate in marketing activities and initiatives within the Travel Department and firm generally.
  • To liaise directly with clients and third parties and foreign agents/lawyers.
  • To build and maintain strong professional working relationships with external institutions and organisations.
  • To work competently and compliantly with a case management system, databases and office IT systems.
  • To undertake other duties essential to the operation of the Travel Law Department as and when directed.
  • To prioritise and manage the efficient and prompt progression of cases and ensure cases.
  • To adhere to the professional Code of Conduct and comply with the firm’s internal policies, best practices and procedures as updated from time to time and to comply with all applicable legislation applicable to the legal profession and to all relevant quality standards.
  • Through training keep fully up to date with relevant legislation and best practice.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of all firm-wide and client documentation and that information is protected at all times.

  • Making telephone calls to clients and witnesses both on new and existing cases.
  • Liaising with the New Business Team with regards to the opening of new files.
  • Assisting with risk assessments for new claims
  • Preparing trial bundles.
  • Researching a company’s history.
  • Liaising with external bodies such as Courts, etc.
  • Organising conferences and meetings.
  • Giving oral explanations to clients regarding funding.
  • Managing and updating in-house databases.

Experience / Knowledge / Qualifications

  • A competent knowledge of Personal Injury Law and Civil Procedure, including procedural and practical skills
  • 5 GCSE (to include Maths & English) or equivalent.
  • Strong interpersonal and practical skills including demonstrable negotiation skills.
  • A degree or CILEX or equivalent but is not essential.
  • A fee-earning track record with proven results and evidence of hitting financial targets but not essential.
  • Strong IT Skills with the ability to work with a Case Management System, databases and normal office IP systems.
  • Experience of working with the general public and demonstrate a sensitive and cooperative approach to clients.
