The role

We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified Barrister or Solicitor, with a minimum of 3 years PQE, to join our small and dynamic legal team as In House Counsel.  A key part of your role will be to support the Head of Investigations and Enforcement in ensuring the quality and timeliness of cases to tribunal.  You’ll also be providing support and advice to our Investigations Oversight Panel as well as clerking support to the Code Adjudication Tribunals to facilitate legally sound decision making.  Although our tribunals tend to be paper based, occasionally providers may exercise their right to have their case heard orally, in which case you would be required to support the Senior Counsel in the management of these accordingly.

The role is varied and broad and you’ll also have an opportunity to be involved in the development, implementation or review of current policy and published procedures, including our Code of Practice, Supporting Procedures and Guidance.  On occasion, you will be required to draft, review or negotiate contracts and you will also perform the duties of a FOIA officer for the organisation.  Training and support will be provided.

The person

The successful candidate will be a qualified Barrister or Solicitor with at least 3 years PQE and some solid public law and regulatory enforcement experience. Ideally, you’ll have worked for another regulatory or disciplinary body and have first-hand experience of regulatory case work.  Experience of dispute resolution and the operation of EU law would also be advantageous. You’ll also have a good range of legal skills including research, drafting, negotiations and some litigation experience.

Your written, listening and speaking communication skills will be first rate, and you’ll have excellent attention to detail too.  The successful candidate will also be a self-starter who takes a proactive approach to problem solving and is quick to learn new areas of law.

The hours

This is a part time role of 3 days a week. We are happy to have discussions with the right candidate about working patterns.

The company

We are the UK regulator for content, goods, and services charged to a phone bill.  Phone-paid services are the goods and services that you can buy by charging the cost to your phone bill or pre-pay account. They include directory enquiries, voting on TV talent shows, donating to charity by text or downloading apps on your mobile phone. They are referred to as premium rate services in law.

The culture

We’re a small organisation with around 45 staff.  We have a friendly office environment and have worked hard to create a fantastic office culture, underpinned by our values. We have an open plan office to boost collaboration and the CEO’s office door is always open. We encourage everyone to speak face-to-face and build strong relationships with colleagues rather than communicating via email. We have regular all staff meetings to ensure that everyone is kept up to date on what we’re working on as a business, introduce new colleagues and to share successes.

We have a supportive management ethos with a strong emphasis on personal development. This means there’s plenty of opportunities to learn from colleagues, job shadow, knowledge share, mentor and take part in project work.  Lunch & learns regularly feature on the agenda, and occasionally we invite guest speakers in to present. We have a Silver Investors in People award, which we’re very proud of. The award demonstrates our commitment to our staff, and the value we place on our team.

The rewards

In addition to our friendly office culture, and supportive management ethos, we have an excellent reward package, here are a few of the highlights:

  • 25 days holiday
  • Life assurance at 4 x salary
  • 6% Employers pension contribution
  • Choice of private medical health schemes
  • Enhanced family friendly policies
  • Season ticket loan
