Support the MOD’s mission with your exceptional property law knowledge

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is committed to protecting British people, the nation’s interests and our borders. As both a defensive and peace-keeping force, its work is complex and continues to evolve. In order to continually meet the challenges presented by a rapidly changing world, the MOD works in partnership with government colleagues to manage issues to best effect, and as such, it’s relationship with the Government Legal Department (GLD) is vital – and it is here that you could join us.

As a member of the GLD (which is the largest provider of legal services within Whitehall), you will be part of a collaborative community of professionals who are keen to share expertise across career-defining projects. Specifically, you will join a team of 10 Lawyers where you will offer comprehensive commercial and residential property advice on a broad array of matters, plus on any associated areas such as environmental law, property litigation, agricultural law and planning law. With your work impacting on the MOD’s real estate projects and transactions, each day will be varied, with tasks extending from negotiating with buyers and tenants to drafting contractual documentation. You will also conduct research and draft and negotiate a broad array of documents, letters and contracts, and you will serve landlord and tenant notices.

From instructing Counsel to formulating responses to Parliamentary Questions and Freedom of Information requests, this is a multi-layered role that offers great networking prospects and scope for development. As you will be working with a wide array of stakeholders including external Lawyers and Surveyors, you will need solid communication and team-playing skills, particularly as you will be required to mentor HEO and SEO grade Lawyers, filling in knowledge gaps and sharing your expertise. With a comprehensive knowledge of property law, you will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive, and you will have good legal judgement and an appreciation of legal risk.

This is a fascinating chance to be based in the purpose-built headquarters of the Defence Equipment and Support Agency at Abbey Wood, Bristol. You will be exposed to high-profile cases and projects, with a wide network of support from colleagues who share your goals. Benefitting from a good work/life balance and a competitive benefits package, this is a valuable opportunity to put your skills to the test in a fast-paced team who always strive to see the bigger picture.
