Solicitor - Ryedale District Council

Location: Ryedale, North Yorkshire
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Salary: £37,849 to £41,675
Closing date: 15 August 2019

Ryedale District Council requires two Solicitors to provide modern, enabling, effective and efficient legal advice to the Council, staff and Members. These two roles will provide a range of services between them, so we welcome candidates with legal experience and backgrounds in a variety of areas.

The Council is a dynamic, positive and forward-thinking organisation and they expect their employees to share this ethos. You'll be a qualified Solicitor who is proactive and hungry for making a real difference in a local government setting through championing legal and constitutional compliance and enabling progression through a risk managed, not risk averse approach. The successful candidate will be solutions-driven, flexible and able to actively manage and mitigate risks in the day-to-day progression of Council business.

You'll be responsible for presenting cases and representing the Council in courts and tribunals as well as supporting staff in conducting their responsibilities in a legally and constitutionally compliant manner. You will also contribute to the development of Legal Services, adopting and embedding continuous improvement so that it supports the operation of a modern Council. Additional duties include those of Deputy Monitoring Officer for the Council, conducting property transactions and providing related legal advice and other duties commensurate with the responsibility level of this post.

A confidence working with Elected Members is crucial, as is a resilience when working in a dynamic political and publically transparent environment. You should be confident in carrying out investigations, including those involving adherence to Council standards. Confidence and trust in Legal Services by the public and staff is crucial to the Council, so you'll need to be confident in dealing with a wide range of people and presenting yourself in a clear, credible and helpful way. The successful candidate will need to uphold and promote the reputation and standing of the Council from day one, so a confidence in performing this role is crucial.

Ryedale District Council promotes a modern working environment so you'll be positive about using new technologies and embracing a flexible approach to work. In this role, your responsibilities and caseload will be many and varied, so you'll need to be organised, have the ability to keep calm under pressure and be able to turn your full skills and abilities to the task in hand. This is a varied and challenging role so you'll need to be able to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

This position is a chance to develop your skills and abilities through contributing to the success of an important local government Legal Services department while embedding and progressing stronger working relationships and wider professional links with North Yorkshire County Council’s legal services. If you think you have what it takes, apply now.
