The Role 

The Office of Speaker’s Counsel provides legal advice to Mr Speaker, the Clerk of the House, Committees and all the staff teams in the House.  

 The Office consists of eighteen qualified lawyers (a mixture of solicitors and barristers). This post is in the general advice team, which provides advice on a wide range of matters including (but not limited to) constitutional law and parliamentary privilege, freedom of information, data protection, employment, copyright and intellectual property, litigation, procurement and commercial contracts. 

The successful candidate will bring their substantial experience of practice to this role and will be providing authoritative advice to senior stakeholders on a range of matters. 

The Person 

The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience: 

  • Qualified to practise as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales. 
  • Excellent general knowledge of English law, with a particular focus on constitutional and public law. 
  • The ability to make sound high-level decisions quickly whilst under pressure. 
  • The ability to motivate colleagues and to coach and support other staff.
