Head of Solicitors – Public Defender Service
Legal Aid Agency
Location: Cheltenham, Darlington, London, Pontypridd or Swansea
Salary range: £49,802 - £80,756 (Salary dependant on base location)

The Public Defender Service are seeking to recruit an experienced manager to lead their Solicitors team. The right person will have strong experience of managing a large, professional team using legal, financial and operational management skills, extensive criminal defence experience and a desire to contribute to the wider criminal justice system.

As a qualified Solicitor or Barrister, you will be passionate about criminal law and have a wealth of experience in providing advice and representation in the police station and magistrates’ courts. You will have excellent practical knowledge of current criminal law, evidence and procedure.

The role will involve responsibility for the overall leadership and management of the four PDS offices, working with individual heads of offices to deliver high quality criminal defence services. The successful candidate will have extensive experience of leading and motivating a team, supervising legal case work, as well as appreciating the need for high standards of client care and legal practice.

You will be expected to have excellent communication skills and personal presence, that enable rapport-building with all stakeholders, line reports and the wider team.

You will need to be assertive, astute as well as being a good listener and full of energy. The successful candidate will be an existing Solicitor or Barrister, with at least 5-7 years post qualification experience. A full driving licence and use of a motor vehicle is essential.
