About the Role:

A fantastic opportunity for a Senior Solicitor to join the Legal Services Department of a globally renowned federal institution and one of the oldest and largest universities in the UK. The Senior Solicitor will be responsible for high quality and pragmatic legal advice to the institution, its Board of Trustees and committees, and the senior management and staff. The successful candidate will have specific responsibility for drafting, negotiating and advising on a full range of contracts and for leading on all legal aspects of commercial matters; commerical contract experience is essential. The Senior Solicitor will support the Associate Director and Director of Legal Services in the development and maintenance of a responsive and professional legal service, and will act as Deputy in their absence.

Key Requirements
The ideal candidate for this Senior Solicitor role will have:

  • A qualification as a Solicitor or Barrister
  • 2+ years PQE preferable
  • Experience in Commercial and Employment law is essential
  • Proven ability to deliver high quality legal work directly to internal clients and independently of senior lawyers
  • Ability to work in a higher education environment (experience highly desirable not essential)
  • Up to date knowledge of Higher Education and Procurement laws would be desirable

Key responsibilities
The successful candidate for this Senior Solicitor role will be required to:

  • Draft and negotiate legal agreements, letters and other documentation and to review and negotiate documentation prepared by others, including commercial and other contracts
  • To provide advice on legally contentious matters and disputes
  • Work with the Property and Facilities Management Solicitor as required, to advise on property law issues
  • To deputise for the Associate Director (Legal Services) in his/her absence
  • To advise the Procurement team in the Finance and Planning Department on legal issues relating to tenders
  • To monitor and review relevant employment legislation and policy and advise on employment law matters
  • To provide reviews and oversight of regulations and procedural framework
