The Electoral Commission have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Lawyer to join their growing team in London.

Job Title: Senior Lawyer

Location: London

Salary: £64,452 per annum

Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

Senior Lawyer – About Us:

The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity.

As a statutory body, the Commission relies on its Legal Team for high quality legal advice and support to advance its objectives and keep it within the law. The Legal Team has a crucial role to play within the Commission.

This is a very exciting time to be joining the Commission. It has a growing public profile and it operates in the full glare of the public spotlight in an increasingly contested regulatory environment.

In the past ten years the Legal Team has grown to reflect the Commission’s developing needs for legal support. We have recently restructured and the new Team will consist of 12 members of staff under the leadership of the General Counsel.

The structure under the General Counsel is three Senior Lawyers and this post is a new post created to strengthen the Team and have a lead responsibility for practice management issues. We have taken this step because of the imminent introduction of a new case management system and a renewed focus on quality assurance, tighter practice management and client reporting.

Senior Lawyer – About the Role:

The Senior Lawyer will handle his / her own caseload of legal matters but will also have responsibility for managing a small team involving at least one lawyer and two legal officers, who will support the Legal Team as a whole.

Currently we have only one Legal Officer but the re-structure has created a second post to reflect the work arising from the introduction of the case management system and other administrative processes.

Senior Lawyer – Requirements:

Obviously the Commission operates in a niche area so we do not necessarily expect candidates to have extensive experience of electoral law. However, experience of advisory work, litigation, public and administrative, regulatory law, policy and drafting will all be highly relevant.

In addition, we are particularly keen to attract candidates with sound experience of practice management including the operation and development of case management systems, the implementation of practice management systems and processes and introducing or maintaining Lexcel standards.

This is an exciting time to be joining both the Team and the Commission. The Commission’s profile has never been higher and, while it is not possible to predict the future, it is safe to say that whatever happens in UK politics over the next few months, the Commission will definitely need a strong legal team.
