Senior Lawyer and Company Secretary
Location: Leicester
Salary: Competitive
PPL PRS Ltd is the operational licensing arm of the UK’s two music licensing companies, PPL and PRS for Music, responsible for ensuring that hundreds of thousands of businesses and organisations across the UK have the appropriate licence they need to play and perform music at their premises.
Previously, businesses and organisations had to obtain separate licences from PPL and PRS for Music. To streamline the licensing process for businesses and organisations playing and performing music, PPL and PRS for Music joined forces to form PPL PRS Ltd as a 50:50 joint venture based in Leicester. In February 2018, PPL PRS Ltd opened its doors and launched TheMusicLicence, covering virtually all commercially-released music available with just one licence, one invoice, and a single point of contact.
Purpose of the Role
A new senior lawyer is being recruited to act as the principal counsel at PPL PRS, ensuring legal compliance, providing general legal advice and working closely with the Enforcement Team. The role will play an integral part in ensuring the business meets industry standards and is well supported from a legal perspective.
The appointed individual will hold key accountabilities in relation to:
- Ensuring legal compliance and managing legal services to the company in respect of all aspects of the operation of the business, from providing legal support and advice for the businesses’ commercial procurement relationships (including IT outsourcing, software licensing and other services) to advising on regulatory compliance and providing advice in relation to general licensing queries, including advising on questions from colleagues and customers.
- Carrying out company secretarial duties and providing relevant legal advice to the company’s Executive Team and Board.
- Working closely with the enforcement team, dealing with enforcement (and where appropriate, and with external legal support, litigation on a debt or copyright infringement basis) on a bulk basis against businesses/organisations who are in breach of their PPL PRS licence(s) or who are unlicensed for playing music in public.
Experience and Qualification
The appointed individual will be a qualified solicitor with at least 4 years’ post-qualification experience. They must be willing to work strategically but also to be happy to get “hands on” and into the detail. A general commercial skillset with some prior in-house/secondment experience is preferred, as is litigation experience (especially in the IP and/or bulk litigation context). This role would suit an individual looking to take the next step up in their legal career.
