£35,481 - £38,700

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join the Essex Police Legal Department as an Operational Lawyer.

Applications are invited from qualified solicitors and barristers with rights of audience in magistrates’ and county court.

You will be responsible for your own caseload (which will include civil applications for gang and other injunctions, domestic violence protection orders, sexual offender orders and closure orders).  You will prepare cases, undertake advocacy before the courts, engage with officers and partner agencies, support the enforcement process and handle any appeals.

You will be required to provide professional advice to officers on the use of such orders and other methods for deterring offending, gang-related drug dealing and violence and other anti-social behaviour.  You will also be required to assist and provide professional support to the Force Solicitor on all aspects of law as it affects the force, including the investigation of all legal claims made by or against the Chief Constable.

You will be required to join a rota providing standby cover for remand courts on Saturdays and Bank Holidays.

You will need to evidence in your application the following areas/ technical skills:

  • Are conversant with a wide range of civil and criminal law matters, and able to act as advocate
  • Make decisions using the best available evidence, considering different perspectives, testing assumptions and challenging information provided when necessary whilst identifying and mitigating risk
  • Always act with integrity for the benefit of the public, demonstrating courage in doing the right thing even in challenging situations

This opportunity would suit a highly-motivated and dynamic individual who can remain calm and professional under pressure and who is committed to providing the best service to the public.
