Your new role

As a Lawyer with experience in planning and highways law, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of the second Road Investment Strategy, encountering diverse and exciting legal challenges along the way. Although you will predominantly advise across planning and highways law you may also be required to get involved across a full range of areas of the business, meaning no two days are the same. We are responsible for delivering some of the largest infrastructure projects in England, as a result the work you will be entrusted to complete will have a significant impact on us delivering what we have promised.

The role is open to all who meet the basic requirements however it is felt it would be particularly suited to a lawyer with between 1-5 years PQE. This is an excellent opportunity to take the next step in your career.

What you’ll be leading on

• General drafting, negotiating and advising on highways and planning agreements.

• Giving strategic advice on planning and highways applications and considering the implications of planning applications for the Strategic Road Network as a statutory consultee under the Town & Country Planning Act 1990.

• Providing advice to the business on compulsory purchase, highways law, permitted development, planning conditions, consultation, judicial review, and High Court challenges.

• Working with external lawyers on the delivery of the Road Investment Strategy including advising on Development Consent Orders.

• Advising on the delivery of highway schemes under the Highways Act 1980.

• Assisting with general and varied legal queries affecting the business.

To be successful

• Qualified to practice as a Solicitor or Barrister in England and Wales or a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.

• Experience of planning and highways law.

• Knowledge of highways and road traffic legislation.

• Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders and influence across all levels of the business.

• Strong team player with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, project teams and external consultants.

• With a choice of home office you will predominantly support the Midlands and North regions of the business so a willingness to travel between offices when required is essential.
