The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Home Office. We provide information to employers and other organisations in England and Wales (and barring information only in Northern Ireland) so they can make informed recruitment and licensing decisions, especially for employees and volunteers working with vulnerable groups. We also determine whether an individual can take up relevant posts by making decisions about inclusion on a barred list.

The post holder will be required to support the Associate Director of Legal Services (HOS) to provide professional legal support and advice to the DBS enabling delivery of DBS services.
They will be accountable for providing accurate, fit for purpose and timely legal advice and support to the business. The Jobholder will have support from the Legal Support Officer and Legal Administrative Officer. They will report directly to the Associate Director of Legal Services.

Key accountabilities:

Corporate duties
• To support the Associate Director of Legal Services to provide legal advice and support to the DBS Board and its Committees.
• To support the Associate Director of Legal Services to provide legal advice and support to the Executive Management Team.
• To deputies for the Associate Director of Legal Services in appropriate corporate or BAU activities.

Operational Delivery
• Working at pace, provide timely, fit for purpose legal advice to all areas of the DBS to support the delivery of DBS services.
• To conduct litigation or instruct external providers to conduct litigation in respect of legal challenges to the DBS, by the DBS or involving the DBS.
• Proactively engage with relevant external partners including legal and policy officers of Government Departments, the Police and the Court and Tribunal Service, ensuring DBS views are always represented and the organisation is continuously kept up to date with and can adopt best practice.

Essential:
• Solicitor/Barrister with significant PQE, with or eligible for practice certificate.
• Experience of advising public bodies.
• Demonstrable knowledge of the law relevant to the DBS specifically and Non-Departmental Public Bodies generally.
• Litigation experience.
• Excellent communication skills.
