As the largest provider of legal services across government, the Government Legal Department (GLD) provides high-quality legal advice to clients on matters that are frequently scrutinised in Parliament and the media.

We’re looking for ambitious qualified lawyers, to join our department of 2,500 colleagues primarily based in London, with teams in Bristol, Manchester and Leeds, working in supportive teams where we can offer challenging and exciting work that makes a huge impact on some of the biggest issues faced by the United Kingdom.

What you can expect to be working on

You can expect to be working with clients from departments such as the Home Office, the Department for International Trade, to the Department of Health and Social Care and the Ministry of Defence, to name just a few. Working in either our advisory, litigation, employment or commercial services teams. The GLD make a huge impact on all aspects of life in the United Kingdom, from commercial contracts to trade negotiations.

We cover Advisory, Litigation, Employment and Commercial Law, which gives our lawyers a unique opportunity to work across many departments.


 

What will I need to apply?

  • You’ll be a Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales (or you will qualifywithin 3 months of making your application) and you will have completed a training contract, pupillage or qualifying employment (unless you have been exempted from this by the Law Society, the Bar Council or CILEx).
  • You’ll have a minimum 2:1 degree in any subject, or equivalent high level academic or professional achievements.
  • Individuals with less than one year of experience will spend two years in both a contentious and a non-contentious post on our Newly Qualified Scheme.
