Assistant Public Solicitor – Family & Civil

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

2 years FTC commencing August 2020

£40,000 per annum, taxable in St Helena

A tax free International Supplement will also apply

In this vital role you will support the Public Solicitors Office with advisory and litigation support in relation to Public Law and children and offer general advice in relation to a wide range of civil legal queries.

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK.  Following the opening of its international airport in October 2017, St Helena is better placed to develop both economically and socially.

You will represent parents and children in applications from the Social Services in the Magistrates’ and Supreme Court as well as the Court of Appeal, with representation throughout proceedings and preparation of all documents to final hearings. You will also represent clients in general civil matters including Employment, Clinical Negligence. This role does not have any criminal advisory or litigation work however advocacy experience is essential.

An established UK Solicitor of at least 5 years PQE, with good experience of representation and advocacy in Public Law proceedings and safeguarding work, you will have represented parents and children in court proceedings. With good communication skills and a flexible approach, your working knowledge of computer systems will be supported by strong analytical skills.

In addition, you will use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As a Technical Co-Operation Officer, you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
