Venn Group are very pleased to be partnering with the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham in recruiting for a Contracts Lawyer; working with LBBD wholly owned companies such as Reside and Be First with lots of opportunity for varying work. You will also work with other local authorities on a traded basis.

Although a lot of improvements have been made, resulting in us winning the LGC Driving Growth award as well as LGC Entrepreneurial Council of the Year 2019, there is still more to deliver. Over the coming years we will consolidate the progress we have already made and use the new kind of council to empower residents to live longer, healthier, happier and more independent lives.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Undertake and manage a full caseload of legal work in the area of Contracts and Procurement law and progress to conclusion
  • Prepare, negotiate, draft and agree Council contracts, legal agreements and documents, including works, services, supplies and other contracts, and all other necessary and appropriate documentation associated with matters in the area of Contract and Procurement Law
  • Provide legal advice in relation to local government governance matters and prepare formal Legal Implications for reports, to relevant committees, panels, working parties and other meetings as required
  • Ability to carry a caseload and work with minimum supervision
  • Provide support, guidance and supervision to less experienced staff
  • To notify the Senior Lawyer of any instructions or events that would result in a breach by the Council or an individual of any legislation, common law, standing order or rule or propriety or would constitute a course of action amounting to maladministration
  • To be aware of the cost to the Client of individual activities, to make reasonable estimates of likely costs to Clients for the effective implementation of instructions, and to advise the Senior Lawyer if such estimates or agreed fixed costs are likely to be exceeded
  • Incorporate the Council’s drive to promote equal opportunities and diversity in employment and service delivery into day to day working
  • The Council can offer:

  • The role is a permanent position, grade PO3 - PO5, offering between £36,711 and £45,585 depending on experience
  • Home working/flexible working offered, with the majority of the legal team working from home due to the current circumstances however flexibility will continue to be offered
  •  

    All applicants must be a qualified solicitor, legal executive or barrister with a current practising certificate.

    Additionally, candidates who have worked previously in local authority would be of preference, ideally at least two years, due to the nature of the work including public procurement matters, and understanding general local authorities processes.
