About the role
The Legal Service within Luton Council has a rewarding yet complex portfolio within Social Care. You will manage a specialised team in the area of social services, particularly childcare, vulnerable adults and related matters to meet the needs of the Council and Client Departments.
You’ll assist the Service Director with the management of the Legal Service including representing or deputising for the Service Director and carrying out special projects and assisting in corporate inter service or inter departmental projects and meetings from time to time.
As a legal professional, you’ll show off your proven skills at its highest through your diverse experience, where both a depth and breadth of legal professional knowledge to an extensive degree will be of high value.
You’ll have authority to take or recommend the taking of key decisions as well as instruct Counsel and approve the instruction of Counsel by others, subject to compliance with agreed Service procedures.
As a qualified solicitor or barrister, you’ll have an in-depth knowledge of English Law and a substantial working knowledge of Social Services law, particularly childcare law and the law relating to vulnerable adults.
About you
Do you have a strong passion for Legal Services and can undertake complex legal work without supervision?
Are you able to undertake advocacy in complex cases in Courts and Tribunals?
Can you liaise with clients and team members in a confident and credible manner?
Are you either a Solicitor or Barrister that is qualified in England for over 3 years?
Do you have a thorough understanding of major legislation & policy issues affecting local government practice, particularly corporate governance?
Do you have substantial knowledge of social services?
You’ll need to be a great team player and be able to work well in a team. You will have substantial working knowledge of Social Services law, particularly childcare law and the law relating to vulnerable adults.
We do ask that you are qualified as a Solicitor or a Barrister in England. If you are qualified as a solicitor, we ask that you hold or are able to obtain a current practicing certificate. As a qualified barrister, you enjoy or be able to obtain rights of audience under paragraphs 402.1 and 402.2 of the Code of Conduct for Barristers in England and Wales. You'll need to have been qualified for approximately 3 years.
This is a public facing role so you’ll need to show off your fluency in speaking and writing English.
