Job Details

We are looking for two Regulatory Lawyers (or Legal Advisers, as the role is known internally) to join our Legal and Enforcement team.

The role

Our Legal and Enforcement team deals with contentious matters before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal and the High Court. It also delivers advice internally on investigations and other legal issues.

As a Legal Adviser, you will provide high quality, risk based, legal and regulatory advice to a range of key stakeholders. As well as managing complex and high-profile cases, you will liaise with external legal professionals to share and gain appropriate and required knowledge.

You may be required to make formal decisions upon evidential and public interest tests. Where you become involved in conducting disciplinary or other proceedings, you will need to act in the public interest and ensure cases proceed in a proportionate and timely way.

You will need to demonstrate understanding of a regulatory environment as you will be involved in providing high quality legal advice and conducting cases either in house or with the support of external solicitors.

Read our 'A day in the life of a Legal Adviser' to find what one of our Legal Advisers has to say, and to gain further insight into the role. You will find this document attached at the bottom of the advert on the SRA jobs page.

What's in it for me

  • Opportunity to use your litigation skills in the public interest
  • Help drive conduct investigations by providing practical legal advice to Investigation Officers
  • Opportunities to be an advocate of the SRA in public events
  • To expand and develop your legal, regulatory experience
  • Join a supportive and friendly team with a renowned regulator

What we are looking for

  • A qualified solicitor, barrister, registered European lawyer or an equivalent qualified lawyer in a common law or other jurisdiction, with a current practising certificate.
  • Experience of conducting litigation, or providing legal advice in a regulatory environment
  • Significant experience of case analysis, legal drafting and decision making in a contentious or regulatory environment
  • Ability to acquire and apply extensive knowledge of law and regulation of legal services

Useful information

  • To apply, please use the apply button at the bottom of the advert. We are looking for you to upload two documents; a CV and cover letter. Uploading a CV and Cover Letter provides you the best opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and experience and how they specifically relate to the requirements of this role and what we are looking for.
  • Our staff are currently working from home and all interviews and assessments are being conducted virtually. If your application is successful one of the team will be in touch to let you know what to expect.
  • This role is based in our Birmingham office but due to the pandemic the successful candidate will be working from home for the foreseeable future. Looking forward, there is scope for this role to be based from home for part of the week. We are happy to talk flexible working based on individual circumstances.
  • If you have any questions about the role, organization, or working arrangements please contact us via email on recruitment@sra.org.uk
  • We are able to offer this role on a part time basis; part time hours would allow for 28-35 hours per week, working across 4 days.
  • Closing date for applications is 4 October at 23:55 and assessment and interviews are scheduled to take place week of 19 October.
  • Previous applicants to the role in the last six months need not re-apply.
