The role

We are looking to appoint Qualified Lawyers Assessors (QLAs) for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) to work on a flexible ad-hoc daily basis. The SQE is a new, independent, centralised assessment for all would-be solicitors.

The QLAs will consider and make recommendations on applications for exemption from parts of the SQE from qualified lawyers. We are looking for individuals who are solicitors and who have:

  • knowledge and understanding of the SQE and the content and structure of the SQE assessments;
  • understanding and experience of legal education and training in England and Wales
  • an understanding of the legal system in England and Wales and an ability to understand how it differs from systems in other jurisdictions
  • experience of writing evaluation reports
  • strong analytical skills
  • the ability to communicate clearly and accurately in writing
  • a strong commitment to equality and diversity and fair decision making.

Useful information

The successful applicant will start by January 2021 for a period of up to five years.

Assessors will need to be able to commit time to considering applications within 30 days of when the application is sent to them. Applications may be submitted at any time of the year whenever the candidate chooses. We anticipate that it will take assessors up to two days to consider an application and write a report. We expect the number of applications received per year to be small.

The work will be remunerated at a day rate of £400 gross per day.
