Job Details

Barrister

This is an outstanding opportunity for a qualified Barrister to work in-house within a leading UK law firm based in their Birmingham office. The firm has adopted flexible working enabling staff to work from home 3 days per week even before pre COVID 19 times.

The Firm
A national legal practice acting for a wide range of clients in both public and private sector, including all forms of NHS organisations, governmental and regulatory bodies, registered providers, insurers, police, fire and rescue services, independent health and social care providers, charities and GP practices.

The Role
A top ranked professional discipline team working with regulatory bodies, primarily in the health sector but, increasingly, more widely across a number of professional disciplines.

The work largely involves presenting cases but also requires managing an investigatory caseload where it is alleged that the registrant's fitness to practise is impaired through misconduct, competence or health issues and preparing those cases for hearings before panels and committees of the relevant regulators.

Advocacy typically involves interim and substantive hearings. This includes shorter more straightforward hearings as well as more complex cases such as sexual misconduct, dishonesty allegations/ fraud and serious instances of deficient professional performance. Hearings are usually contested and in the majority of cases the registrants are represented, most often by counsel.  It is likely that there will also be opportunities to appear in the High Court and the First Tier Tribunal on appeals from decisions of the regulators. Depending on experience, there are likely to be other advocacy opportunities arising from other aspects of the department's work.

The Candidate
A qualified Barrister with at least 2+ year's call, ideally, with previous experience in the field of regulation and professional discipline is strongly preferred, it is not essential.  Experience or the ability to supervise more junior lawyers is essential.
This is a great opportunity to join a friendly, dynamic and expanding team in a market leading firm with the opportunity to influence and shape the ways the dispute advocacy service evolves moving forwards.

Salary to dependent upon experience.
